How To Correctly Prepare and Drink Matcha Green Tea

* a small tea caddy/container specifically designed for matcha green tea ( known as “Natsume”) that optimally preserves all its therapeutic properties intact ( you can substitute this item with a similar container that you have in your home)
* a special scoop, also made of bamboo ( called ” Chashaku”), used to scoop the powdered green tea from the container to the tea bowl.
* a small-sized linen cloth ( known as ” Chakin”), used to wipe the tea bowl with.
* a special receptacle ( called “Kensui”), used for pouring waste water into.
* hot water
Here is how to prepare matcha tea the traditional Japanese way so that you can reap its maximum health benefits.
Step 1. Use the bamboo scoop ( Chashaku) to place a small amount of powdered matcha green tea ( the recommended amount is two scoops) into a tea strainer. Sifting the matcha tea prior to making it will help prevent lumps when mixing it with hot water and also make it even more delicious, consistent and palatable.
Step 2. Pour a small amount of hot water into the tea bowl and move the water using circular motion to warm the entire bowl. Pour the water into the special receptacle and throw it away.
Step 3. Wipe the tea bowl thoroughly using the special cloth (Chakin).
Step 4. Place the recommended amount of matcha green tea ( 2 scoops or 1/2 teaspoon of matcha) into the tea bowl and add 2.1 oz ( 60 ml) of hot water.
Step 5. Using the bamboo whisk, start moving it gently to agitate the powdered green tea all around. After getting the tea roughly mixed to a uniform consistency continue with whisking the mixture back and forth and preferably quite fast for optimum results. The ideal movement should follow the letter “M” and the recommended time of whisking is 10-20 seconds. Depending your specific preferences and tastes, you can choose to whisk it a little bit longer to produce froth. The delicious matcha green tea is now ready for serving.
How to drink matcha green tea
Turn the tea bowl and place it with the front of the bowl facing you or your guest. Traditionally, a small, special sweet called “wagashi) is consumed prior to drinking the prepared matcha tea, to counteract its slightly bitter taste. Enjoy your healthy and delicious drink and bon appetit!
