So you want to travel and stay fit at the same time?
That’s a tall order, but it can be fulfilled.
First, why do people “gain weight” while traveling?
Travel takes you out of your normal routine.
When you leave your normal routine is when your physique starts to go away because you eat anything and everything and you don’t exercise.
What you need to do while traveling to stay fit is to try and keep your routine as best you can.
That means you need to bring your routine with you.
Here’s how you stay in shape while traveling…
Check baggage – don’t be a bum with one backpack
Using my suggestions you will have to check baggage. A lot of people have an emotional attachment to the idea that you shouldn’t check baggage. But here’s the real deal – you cannot travel well and not check baggage, it is only possible to travel like a slob if you do not check baggage.
Checking baggage is a must for me when I travel – I do not like to travel like a slob. You need to get yourself a good suitcase because you’re going to fill that sucker up with…
Bring peanut butter with you
Years ago I had this bodybuilder friend at the gym who would go out to the nightclub to pick up chicks – but every so often he’d sneak to the corner, open up his jacket and eat peanut butter in the nightclub.
To stay in extraordinary shape requires extraordinary actions like eating peanut butter in a night club (or while traveling). The best tasting peanut butter is made by Peanut Butter co. and my personal favorite flavor is called crunch time.
Peanut butter is great because it’s easy to eat (no cooking required) and it’s full of protein and good fats and it’s very filling. So if you find yourself in a nightclub at night time (or a UFC event at midnight) you can eat some peanut butter to tide yourself over until you get back to your rental refrigerator.
(When you don’t have options you will eat anything – so make sure and bring options like peanut butter).
Bring protein bars while traveling
Real food is always better than supplements, but not all food is always better that supplemental food. Sometimes you can’t get real food and you’re forced to eat donuts for dinner if you don’t plan ahead.
It was while I was biting into my 2nd donut that I thought…
“This trip was poorly planned. I shouldn’t be eating donuts right now, I should have at least brought some protein bars”.
That’s when I came to the obvious realization that you should always have protein bars when you are away from your home/kitchen for an extended period of time.
Quest bars are the best protein bars on the market currently.
Order Japanese food while traveling
Getting the right nutrition in while traveling is *tough*. I’ve spent periods where I’ve lived on snickers bars and sugary drinks. The problem is that you wait too long to eat and then you crave sugar.
I’ve also gone away from Intermittent Fasting to a more traditional 3-4 (or 5) meals per day schedule. I DO NOT like being full.
I like to stay hungry because staying hungry helps you stay sharp. To stay hungry and still feed the musces I take 3-5 small meals per day.
This routine is always interrupted while traveling, but I’ve found the solution…
Japanese food is the best nutritional profile for bodybuilders and fitness boys and girls. I’ve found it nearly impossible to get steak and eggs anywhere but home, but Japanese restaurants are everywhere. Thanks to the miracle of the internet, you can get restaurants to simply deliver to you almost anywhere you are.
I use FoodPanda.com to order food and they appear to be very international. When you’re looking at Japanese food to re-heat I would stay away from sushi (even though sushi is the best food for bodybuilders) and I would stick with rice bowls that have chicken or beef (no pork!).
Buy a bunch of water as soon as you arrive to your hotel
Dehydration is a real concern while traveling. You’re often out and about and you simply don’t think about drinking water, so you need to make drinking water a priority.
While traveling you tend to drink less water than normal when you should be drinking more water than normal.
The easy way to circumvent this is to purchase a shopping cart full of waters and teas and whatever else you like to drink and bring them back to your hotel room refrigerator. Grab one each time you leave and drink it before you get to your destination.
Work out first thing in the morning while traveling
The best time of day to train for busy people is first thing in the morning so you get it out the way and have time to go adventuring.
Cardio is better than weightlifting while traveling because while you do want to sweat and get a workout in, you don’t want to make yourself exhausted.
Use a supplement box for your supplements
What tends to happens if I don’t bring a supplement box traveling is that I end up not taking any of my vitamins or supplements. I bring them, but when you go out and about to a new land your priorities tend to shift and you forget to take them.
To make it easy to take your supplements while traveling, you can keep them in a supplement box and then keep them in your day bag.
For extra security, set your alarm clock on your phone for 2-3 times daily to remind you to take your supplements.
Note: If you can purchase grapefruit juice, do so and take your supplements with it. Grapefruit juice is notorious for helping you digest supplements easier and quicker. So even if you forgot to take all of your supplements, you can take some of your supplements with grapefruit juice and get the most out of those supplements.
